Over the course of 12 incredible hours, you can experience in detail the spectacular sights of two incredible Italian locales. The city of Orvieto, and the town of Assisi.
Seeing Orvieto from a distance is a sight like no other – atop high cliffs in the Italian countryside, Orvieto seems not unlike like a fantasy kingdom. This is no accident – its position atop a volcanic plateau allows for some truly incredible defensive walls and immaculate views. But despite the fantastical appearances, the city is extremely real – and as you venture deeper in, you’ll find that Orvieto’s magical beauty is not limited to its unreal ancient architecture
The city is renowned for its incredible Gothic cathedral, its spires defining Orvieto’s striking skyline. Its cuisine is also second-to-none, with the truffles in particular being especially beloved by all who try them.
Assisi may be smaller in scale, though it is certainly not lacking in grandeur. The town is the birthplace of Saint Francis, and many sites in the town have been dedicated to his life. From the Porziuncola Chapel where he was born, to the Basilica of Saint Francis, which bears his name in grand fashion. A monastery in the hills, “Eremo delle Carceri”, was another favorite area of Saint Francis – historically, he preached to the birds there!
The Basilica of Saint Francis, in particular, is of special interest to your tour. Entry there is provided for you, and you’ll be in awe of the splendor inside. The 13th century architecture has been painstakingly preserved down to the finest detail. Grand vaulted ceilings in the upper basilica give off a sense of holy wonder, the elegance reflecting off the finely-detailed wall fixtures and colorful frescos. The lower basilica contains a network of crypts, and frescos all its own – an experience wholly unique from the upper basilica, with a history and a sense of beauty no less magnificent.
